As a teacher-librarian, I have the opportunity to read young adult books to share with my students. The list that I have provided will have an overview of the book and personal comments. They are on a Book-mercial style image to get a taste of the essence of the book.

The Fortune of Carmen Navarro by Jen Bryant
Based on the famous opera Carmen, this story is set in contemporary times with teens as the cast of characters. This story is told in multiple voices with different perspectives. I wouldn't say this is a romantic book in the traditional way. Ryan falls hard for this girl but his passion and imagination get in the way of forming in type of real relationship. There are some parallels to the original Carmen but does not completely follow the traditional story points.
