Our Castle by the Sea written by Lucy Strange

Our Castle by the Sea is brilliant. Two girls have to see their innocent artistic German mother be placed in an internment camp. Their father confesses to a dangerous act. They help with Dunkirk and look for a spy. The audibook also very good. This is a fantastic book to add to any school library.

Orphan Monster Spy Devil Darling Spy by Matt Killeen

An intense spy story.  Layers of conflict with this young woman at the age of 16 posing as a younger girl trying to find information and stop an evil scientist who abuses test subjects who are forced into horrible deaths.  It's an thriller!  A good read to add to the library.

 

Operation Paperclip by Annie Jacobsen

 A very important book to learn about history.  Men who should have been executed for crimes against humanity.  I was surprised at what the US government did to work with these people.  Very interesting book.

The Women Who Flew for Hitler by Clare Mulley

 An amazing story.  True story.  Two remarkable women and the history behind them and Germany.  I asked my Berlin mom about the Nazi's and what it was like in the time in Berlin and German.  I was to young at the time to truly understand.  Reading (or audio books) takes us back in time to learn and hopefully don't repeat history.  A good book.  Well documented.

The Berlin Girl by Mandy Robotham

 My mother was born in Germany, as a young girl she first hand saw the rise of the Nazi power and hopefully the end of Nazi power because she lived and grew up in Berlin.  For this reason, I chose to read this story.  
Can you imagine a man and his group rise to power and rewrite the constitution, rewrite science and have a propaganda machine?  Well it happened and this story is told in the eyes of an outsider, a journalist and see the whirlwind in the inside.  A good read.  A good audio book as well.

Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen

 I couldn't sleep till I finished this book.  It's intense.  A good book.  A spy story of a girl who must become a spy for survival.  She's a smart girl who must respond quickly.  Always endanger and works with a man who she helps on his missions and then there are times when she must take charger.  A good read and a good audio book. I'm adding to my high school library.

The Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel

 

If you have seen Monuments Men, you know how great it is.  The book is also great.  This is a good book for middle and high school libraries.  An amazing story.  Enjoy this book either by reading or listening to.  

The Boy Who Dared by Susan Campbell Bartoletti

 This is based on a true story that came from the author's different book, Hitler's Youth, also a good book.  Based on true events the author turned it into a novel.  The audio book also good.  It's simply told in flashbacks.  It's an important story to read based on so much research of a glimpse of Germany during the Hitler dictatorship. 

All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace

An amazing story, true and historic.  There are accompany photos that bring the story to life.  What would you do if your country was taken over by a mad man?  These boys took matters in their own hands and inspired their fellow Danes and even other countries.  It's a good read.  It's an important read.

Nazi Saboteurs Hitler’s Secret Attack on America by Samantha Seiple

I'm going to get this book for my high school library.  It's a good read.  Well researched.  History that is part of both America and Germany during World War II.  Audio book also very good. 

Castle In The Clouds by Kerstin Gier

This has everything in this book.  Danger, mystery, romance, ghosts, good guys and bad guys.  Throw in some guests with all sorts of characters and you have a great story.  James Bond meets To Catch A Thief.  Love it.  Will get for my high school library.  Maybe two copies.  The audio book also very good.  Enjoy.

They Went Left by Monica Hesse

Wow.  What happens after the camps are open?  After the survivors who walk out of the Nazi camps,  can they reunite and rebuild their lives.  People having been moved all over, how do you know who's alive and who is looking for you?  Go on a journey with Zofia as she is looking for her brother.  She knows the rest of her family are dead.  A very good read.  The audio book also very good.  I am getting for my high school library.

Hagenheim The Orphan's Wish by Melanie Dickerson

It's a very different from the Aladdin that has magic in the story.  Instead it is a straight forward story of two young people who fall in love.  Aladdin is transported to Germany, not by magic carpet but by a knight who sees something in this special orphan.  He is given an education and is very clever with math.  He also has a friendship with the Duke's daughter and they have a life lasting bond.  But then there's trouble.  This is Christian genre.  It's fine for reading.

Don’t Tell The Nazis by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch

Told simply, brutal history comes alive.  Based on true events of one family, the story is told about how a Polish town is invade by first the Russians and then the Germans.  Many lives were lost in many terrible ways.  We need to help our young people and perhaps our older people remember or learn about learning from history.

The Song of the Jade Lily by Kirsty Manning

Oh my goodness.  A well crafted story for adults to enjoy.  So many elements of tragedy, happiness, love, lies and betrayal make this  a powerful story.  Bringing history alive across two continents, the 1930's and 40's will bring a deeper understanding of what people had gone through.  It's a great story.
Two different time frames that tie in at the very end.  It's a brilliant story.

Almost Autumn by Marianne Kaurin

Based on family history, the story has been translated to English.  It's a good read.  Right up there with The Girl in the Blue Coat. 

Making Bombs For Hitler by Marsha Skrypuch

Wow, this is one important story to add to a school library.  It is a fictional account based on interviews and other research of how people stolen from other countries were forced as slaves for the Nazis.  The story is told in the eyes of a young girl of 11 or so and how she had to endure to survive.  The horrors of what happened are unfathomable.  The story continues as the stolen people who survived and become DP or displaced people.  It is fine for any school library.  Please read.

An Eagle In The Snow by Michael Morpurgo

This story is fine for elementary and middle school library.  It's a fictional account.  It brings you to both World War I and World War II.  A bit paranormal. 

The Plot to Kill Hitler by Patricia McCormick

It's a very good book and I will get for my high school library.  Part of history, when a brave person spoke out.  There were consequences for speaking out in Nazi Germany.  This man and his friends were doing something to make a difference.  This man and his group were heroes.  A must read so that history does not repeat itself.

The Women In The Castle by Jessica Shattuck

This story is an excellent read for adults and mature readers.  As I was reading it, I thought about my mother who was in Berlin during WWII and the aftermath.  I wish I had been able to have conversations with her about life in Berlin during the war and after.  This book provides some insight as to the Russians, the Americans and the German soldiers and the life afterwards as people rebuild their lives. A well written and researched book.  Enjoy.
