The Story She Left Behind by Patti Callahan Henry Beautifully written. I wanted to travel to all the places the author described. The characters are fantastic and the plot well crafted. I highly recommend this as an adult read. Enjoy.

 A very dynamic book to add to library shelves.  History and Art blended together to tell the brothers' stories.  A good book to use in world history when talking about China, when they changed to a very strict communism.  

Turning 15 On The Road to Freedom by Lowery, Leecock and Buckley

 Add this one to your children's library.  A good book that teens will see what other teens can do under difficult times.  Our hero of the story is a brave teen who takes a stand.  This is her story that she share what she has experienced.  A good read and an important read.  See the march for Civil Rights in the eyes of a young teen girl.

The Promise of Change by Jo Allen Boyce and Debbie Levy

 Wow, an important read of one person's story of what she went through when she had to go to an all white school.  I'm adding this one to my high school library.  I think many students who read this will get  a lot out of it.  

Malcolm X By Any Means Necessary by Walter Dean Myers

 

Add this one to your high school library.  It's a good read about a man who was a major part of history from the 60s.  Audio book also very good.  

The Promise of Change by Boyce & Levy

 Based on real events. This story is an important story to read.  Well documented and researched as civil rights, and education makes this compelling book to add to any high school library.

Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges

 This is a must listen to book, read by Ruby Bridges herself.  A brave little girl who didn't fully understand at the beginning her purpose and role until much later.  Her parents view of if she should go to a all white school or not.  So many layers to this book.  She talks about her adult life to and how the events of the day influenced her much later.  A good and important listen to.

The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis

 As a chess club advisor, I thought this would be interesting to read.  It is and it's for mature audiences.  I haven't seen the show.  A lot of mature content.  First, it's good.  Sometimes I wonder if Beth is a bit autistic.  She's amazing how she takes to the game.  But she doesn't fit in.  When she first has sex, it's more of an experiment.  She doesn't truly form relationships.  It's a good read.  Not for high school libraries.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

OMG, this is one great crazy Gothic story. Paranormal and creepy.  Definitely adult.  Well crafted.  Reminds me of House of Usher by Poe meets Stephen King.  It's a good read if you like horror.  Not what I expected.  Audio book a good listen.

Stamped by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X Kendi

This is a book we need now.  To help us as a whole understand how black people have been treated

over the years and why.  How different perspectives played out.  From presidents to everyday people 

responded to racism with actions that go beyond abuse.  This book was written a few months before what is going on right now in the United States.  It is timed perfectly to help us all understand the roots of  anger, hurt and frustration that are being expressed in today's world.  It is an important read.

I'm getting for my high school library!

Gone Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright

Not my favorite, it was alright. Writing for children's book in the 50's is different then now.  Some cultural references that could be considered not appropriate.  There are also some terms that are old fashion that modern students may not understand such as jack knife, button hook.  FYI button hook is for old fashion shoes were fasten by buttons and need a tool to do that.  I would pass on this one.  It would be fine for parents to read to children.

Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata

A beautiful story.  Add this one to your middle school and elementary library.  It's a good read.  You'll need a hankie for this one. 

A Place To Belong by Cynthia Kadohata

This is a really good book that I am going to add to my high school library.  It brings history alive and gives it personal connection.  The audio book also very good.  Watching the big sister grow up and connect with various people and handling hard times.  Add this to your reading list.

The Golden Thread by Meloy and McClure

Loved this book.  So many of our young teens and young people have no idea who Pete Seeger was and what he did.  It's a good book to add to any middle school and high school library. 

The Logans All The Days Past, All the Days To Come by Mildred D. Taylor

I'm adding this to my high school library.  It's a grown up book for both adults and teens.  There is so much to this life of Cassie and her family and friends.  It's an excellent read and also listen to the audio book.  It's an important read.

Let The Children March by Clark-Robinson & Morrison

This is a very important book, especially for older readers.     This is both a picture book but also history.  The illustrations are beautiful.  The words are powerful.  The children are brave.  It's a book that should be in all libraries.  It's a read you want to read.

The Forgotten Girl by India Hill Brown

I listened to the audio book on this one.  I think it would fit well with middle school and upper elementary school libraries.  It's a good ghost story that covers a bit of African American history.  It's not too scary.  Just right.  Enjoy.
