As a teacher-librarian, I have the opportunity to read young adult books to share with my students. The list that I have provided will have an overview of the book and personal comments. They are on a Book-mercial style image to get a taste of the essence of the book.

The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade
The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is rather a philosphical graphic novel. I liked it very much. Death takes a journey and ends up dying multiple times as she seeks the child who will invent immortality. She finds him over the years and he knows that she has met with him over his lifetime. The gods featured in this graphic novel comes from India. It's a good read. I would like to add it to my high school library. Read the book first. f

Mangoes, Mischief and Tales of Friendship by Chitra Soundar
Mangoes, Mischief, and Tales of Friendship is an excellent book to have in elementary, middle and high school libraries. These are stories that take place in India. The two boys, one a prince and one a farmer boy are best friends. Even their fathers are very nice. The boys are smart and work out researching information to solve problems in a realy clever way. A great read.

American Betiya by Anuradha d. Rajurkar
Not for Public School libraries. There's a lot of sneaking around, sex and an almost attempted suicide.
I read it all the way through but really wanted to do a DNF (Did not finish). Before you put this in your library, read it and/or research before you get.

Book Uncle and Me by Uma Krishnaswami
This is a good book to add to an elementary library. Enter the world of a child in India and get a glimpse of what one school girl does to help a retired teacher run a library. How what do has a chain reaction and how important it is to be brave and speak your mind.

Save Me A Seat by Weeks & Varadarajan
Two authors write for two different cultures and characters. This book would fit in to any elementary school and middle school because it brings awareness to several situations, being a new student, being new from a different country/culture. The Indian culture, bullies and starting a new friendship are included in the book. It's good to have this book in your library.
