Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly

Song for a Whale by Lynn Kelly is a great book for middle school students. The author has background experience interpreting for hearing impaired students. She also did some research on an actual hybrid whale that is known as the loneliest whale because of it's song is a different frequency then regular whales. The audiobook is also good. Enjoy.

The Heaven And Earth Grocery Store by James McBride

The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store, starts off with a skeleton found buried deep and takes us on a journey of a community of Jewish and Black community that are deeply connected by a Jewish woman who is kind but also fierce. A young orphan deaf boy is taken in by her because a dangerous group of people thinks he should be in an institution. He gets caught and the community rallys to help him escape. The journey in this book has many layers andthe character depth is well done. The audiobook also good. A great read for adults.

Show Me A Sign by Ann Clare LeZotte

There was a deaf community thriving in the Martha's Vineyard area for quite a while.  This story was written by a librarian who is also deaf.  A good read, to see the world of the non-hearing.  Add this one for your middle school library.

The Silence Between Us by Alison Gervais

I find this a very realistic story.  Alison Gervais created an authentic story.  It's a good one to add to the library for students to understand those with hearing loss and how it can be different to function in world.  It's an honest story.  I'm very glad she wrote this story.  She nailed it.  Add this one to your library.

Piper by Jay Asher, Jessica Freeburg & Jeff Stokely

A classic retelling of the Pied Piper.  Rats have infested villages and when a magical rat catcher  isn't paid a dangerous price is paid.  I think I will get for my high school library.  Enjoy.

Soundless by Richelle Mead

In a silent world, people have to sign to communicate.  Fae wakes up to sound one day and that sets her on a journey.    The story is fine for high school libraries.  I just thought the story was rather slow and had some hiccups in the story line.

Wonder by R. J. Palacio

This is an amazing book.  It could be read by all grades.  Good for helping students have a deeper insight on challenges in life when you don't fit in.  I also appreciate how the story honors the family members.  The oldest girl, Auggie's sister has learned also a lot in the school year.  You get many perspectives to tell this story.  Very smart.  Should be in every school library.

Missing Sisters by Gregory Maguire

I heard this on audio book and was happy to hear it done well.  I had borrowed it from the library.  The story is solid and well crafted.  Gregory Maguire knows how to write.  He nailed his characters, from Alice, to the different children, the nuns.  I bet he invented a backstory for each nun.  He nailed the times also.

Wonder Struck by Brian Selznick

If you've read The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick,  you'll be happy to know that this book is equally crafted.  It's smart with two compelling stories blended together it's a great book to behold.
